RISING HEAT – 2020 Bay Filly by Upstart out of Sweet But Sassy (Skip to the Stone) – Kentucky Bred
Rising Heat (inside) works 3 furlongs at Keeneland in 36:20 on 04-11-22
Rising Heat is a sharp looking filly. She has a great, balanced look with beautiful lines. Overall a really nice looking athlete with some flash to her as well! We’ve had great success with progeny of Upstart already with the likes of Starburst (4 time winner in 6 starts already, including 3 allowance wins) & ONE STEP AHEAD, who was a stakes winner for us at age 2 in 2021.
This filly is by the very promising young Sire, UPSTART. Upstart was a tough, fast multiple graded-stakes winner of $1,732,780 on the track and is himself a son the outstanding stallion FLATTER. Some highlights for Upstart:
- A TOP 5 SECOND-CROP SIRE
- AMONGST THE LEADERS OF HIS STALLION CROP BY EARNINGS, STAKES WINNERS AND STAKES HORSES
- TWO-YEAR-OLD SALES UP TO $600K, YEARLINGS UP TO $510K
- Multiple Graded Stakes Winner of over $1.7 Million
- Stakes Winner and dual Grade 1 Placed each year from 2 to 4
- Flatter’s Best Two-Year-Old

- Defeated the Top Class Frosted twice in First-Place Finishes in the GII Holy Bull and GII Fountain of Youth Stakes at 3
- Winner of the GIII $350,000 Razorback Handicap at 4
Finished his Career with Back-to- Back Placings in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Mile and Grade 1 Whitney Handicap - An Absolutely Gorgeous Individual with Size, Scope and Class
Rising Heat is out of the winning Skip to the Stone mare, Sweet But Sassy. Her 2nd dam, Funder Powers, was by Broad Brush and she was a Half-sister to a slew of stakes horses such as =BLOSSOMING FIELDS (Champion 2-year-old colt in South Africa, Empress Club South African Nursery Plate [G1], etc.), Wise Woman ($213,208, 2nd Schenectady H. [LR] (AQU, $18,678)), Spring Leaf ($118,536, 3rd Hyde Park H. [LR] (BEL, $10,944), etc.), =Railroad Red (2nd Selangor Cup [G2]). She was also the Dam of 9 winners, including stakes placed & 6-time winner So Urgent ($242,566) as well as 13-time winner Jab ($412,675). Her 3rd Dam, Leaf Spring, is a Half-sister to the great MI SELECTO, a Grade 1 winner of $1,475,762.
There is a good deal of stakes quality on both dirt and turf in this filly’s pedigree and she should have some surface versatility to her as a result.

Rising Heat is currently in training at Keeneland in Lexington, KY. She has breezed up to 4 furlongs so far and is training very well. She’ll look to hit the races in November of 2022.
She is being trained by top conditioner & Dubai World Cup winning trainer Michael Stidham. She will be based in the summers at his Delaware Park base. From that east coast base in the summer, she will also be able to conveniently run at Laurel Park, Belmont Park, Saratoga, Penn National, PARX, Presque Isle Downs, Colonial Downs & the Meadowlands when & if appropriate. Rising Heat will winter at either Gulfstream Park in Florida or the Fair Grounds in New Orleans. Keeneland / Churchill Downs are likely landing spots for her spring transitions from Fair Grounds in the winters to the east coast in the summers / fall.
